Addition without carrying
Addition is to collect them together. Here, we will learn the addition of four-digit numbers. We can add two or more numbers together at a time. The numbers which we add are called addends, and the result obtained after adding them is called their sum.
Example: Find the sum of 5276 and 3613.
Solution:
Step 1
Write the given numbers in the columns of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
Step 2
Add ones, 6 ones + 3 ones = 9 ones.
Step 3
Add tens, 7 tens + 1 tens = 8 tens
Step 4
Add hundreds, 2 hundreds + 6 hundreds = 8 hundreds
Step 5
Add thousands , 5 thousands + 3 thousands = 8 thousands
Addition with carrying
Example: Find the sum of 1253 and 4936
Solution:
Step 1
Write the given numbers in the columns of thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones.
Step 2
Add ones, 3 ones + 6 ones = 9 ones
Step 3
Add tens, 5 tens + 3 tens = 8 tens.
Step 4
Add hundreds, 2 hundreds + 9 hundreds = 11 hundreds, 11 hundreds = 1 thousand 1 hundred, carry the 1 thousand to the thousands and write down the 1 hundred in the given column.
Step 5
Add thousands, since we carried a thousand from hundreds we have 2 thousands, So 2 thousands + 4 thousands = 6 thousands.
Addition problems in daily life
Example: There are 20 apples and 30 mangoes on Benjamin’s cart. How many fruits are there altogether?
Solution:
There are 50 fruits altogether
Example: Lily had 427 beads. Her mother gave her another 258 beads. How many beads did Lily have altogether?
Solution:
Lily had 685 beads altogether.
Properties Of Addition
Property 1: Numbers can be added in any order, the sum remains the same.
Example : Lucas bought 3 red balloons and 2 blue balloons.
How many balloons does Lucas have?
Solution: Lucas has 5 balloons.
Lily bought 2 red balloons and 3 blue balloons.
How many balloons does Lily have?
Lily has 5 balloons.
3 + 2 = 5, 2 + 3 = 5
3 + 2 = 2 + 3
We can write 3 + 2 or 2 + 3.
The answer remains 5
How many fruits are there?
8 apples and 1 mango make 9. 1 apple and 8 mangoes make 9
How many sweets are there?
3 blue candies and 4 purple candies make 7. 4 purple candies and 3 blue candies make 7.
Property 2:
When 0 is added to a number, the sum is the number itself.
Examples:
1. 4984 + 0 = 4984
2. 6754 + 0 = 6754
3.4314 + 0 = 4314
Property 3: The sum of three or more numbers remains the same even if their grouping is changed.
For example:
(1469 + 6245) + 1236 = (7714) + 1236 = 8950
or
1469 + (6245 + 1236) = 1469 + (7481) = 8950
Example Find the sum of 12 and 26. 12 + 26 = ?
12 = 10 + 2
26 = 20 + 6
Step 1
Add tens, 10 + 20 = 30
Step 2
Add ones, 2 + 6 = 8
Step 3
Add both answers,
30 + 8 = 38 12 + 26 = 38
