Fundamentals Of Fractions
STORY OF FRACTIONS
Once upon a time in the quaint village of Numerica, there lived two friends, Fred the Numerator and Denise the Denominator. Fred was always on the move, full of energy and eager to explore new possibilities, while Denise was more grounded and structured, providing a foundation for their adventures.
One day, Fred had a brilliant idea. "Denise," he exclaimed, "let's team up and create something extraordinary! We'll call it a 'fraction.' I'll be the numerator, and you'll be the denominator. Together, we'll show the world the beauty of unity in diversity!"
Denise, being the wise and patient friend, agreed. "Alright, Fred, let's give it a try. But remember, for every exciting adventure we embark on, we must maintain balance and harmony."
And so, Fred and Denise set out on their journey to create fractions. They started with a simple fraction, 1/2, where Fred was the numerator, representing the adventurous part, and Denise was the denominator, providing the structure. Together, they formed a perfect partnership.
As their friendship flourished, they encountered other fractions along the way.
3/4, 2/5, 5/8 – each fraction told a unique story of balance and cooperation. Fred and Denise discovered that by working together, they could express a wide range of ideas and concepts.
One day, they faced a challenging task: dividing a cake into equal parts for the entire village. Fred, being a bit impulsive, wanted larger slices, while Denise insisted on fairness and equality. Eventually, they compromised and created 3/6 , ensuring everyone received a fair share.
Their adventures continued as they encountered addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Fred and Denise learned to adapt and cooperate in various situations, teaching the villagers the power of fractions in everyday life.
As time passed, Numerica became a place known for its harmony and balance, thanks to the friendship of Fred the Numerator and Denise the Denominator. The story of fractions became a legend, passed down from one generation to the next, reminding everyone of the importance of working together to create something greater than the sum of its parts. And so, the tale of Fred and Denise, the dynamic duo of Numerica, lived on, inspiring mathematicians and dreamers alike to explore the wonders of fractions.
In Mathematics, fractions are defined as the parts of a whole. The whole can be an object or a group of objects. In real life, when we cut a piece of cake from the whole of it, then the portion is the fraction of the cake. A fraction is a word that is origin nated from Latin. In Latin, “Fractus” means “broken”. In ancient times, the fraction was represented using words. Later, it was introduced in numerical form.
The fraction is also termed as a portion or section of any quantity. It is denoted by using ‘/’ symbol, such as a/b. For example, in 2/4 is a fraction where the upper part denotes the numerator and the lower part is the denominator.
