Life in Northern Mountains of India
Introduction
The northern mountains span across various Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, northern West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, as well as the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir, and Ladakh.
Jammu and Kashmir
Jammu and Kashmir has become a union territory in 2019. Srinagar is its summer capital while Jammu. is its winter capital. Here, two main regions are Jammu and Kashmir valley. Jammu and the Kashmir valley are cold in winters and pleasant in SUTUTIETS. The states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, northern West Bengal, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, and Mizoram, along with the union territories of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, are home to the northern mountains. Dal Lake A Kashmiri Woman This area has a large number of tourist places. The well-known hill stations here include orinagar, Pahalgam, Gulmarg etc. It is also known for two cave shrines (Vaishno Devi and Amarnath). There are two lakes called Dal Lake and Wular Lake. People use shikaras, a type of boat, for travel and transport on the lakes. Some vendors use shikaras to sell flowers and vegetables. Houseboats are used as houses and hotels on lakes. Farming, animal husbandry and tourism are important occupations of people. Terrace-farming is practised here. In it, hills are cut into steps for growing crops. The important crops grown here are rice, maize, rajma (kidney bean), vegetables (cabbage, potato), fruits (apple, peach, cherry) and dry fruits (almond, walnut) etc. The Kashmir valley is famous for the saffron crop. People also rear sheep and goats for wool and meat. Other important occupations include handicrafts, woodwork, embroidery and carpet-work. A large number of tourists visit the state, so tourism is an important occupation. Men wear kurta-salwar and women wear kameej-salwar. In winter, people wear a long coat called phiran. Inside the phiran, they carry a kangri, a type of cane-basket with embers to keep warm. They like to drink kahwa, a type of delicious tea without milk. Almost all festivals are celebrated here, such as Diwali, Dussehra, Shivratri, Eid etc. The chief languages spoken here include Urdu, Dogri, Kashmiri and Ladakhi.
