The aim of forming the Trusteeship Council was to help the nations and territories which were then being ruled by the colonial powers. It had been assigned eleven of them as trusts. All these trusts have become independent, so this organ is not working at the moment.
Agencies of the United Nations
The organs of the UN are its essential parts. In addition to them, the UN has 18 specialised agencies which deal in specific matters. They mainly work for the wellbeing of people in different countries. Let us know about a few of them.
United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF)
The UNICEF is doing a great work in child welfare schemes. It was established in 1946 and its headquarters are located at New York. It runs programmes like disease-care campaigns, day-care centres and school-food plans. It also holds child education and teacher training programmes in different countries; for example, the Anganwadi in India is run by this UN agency. It gets its funds from the member-nations. It also runs some business activities to earn money, like selling greeting cards and gifts.
World Health Organisation (WHO)
The WHO, founded in 1948, is based in Geneva (Switzerland) and has 194 member countries. It aims to improve public health by preventing and controlling diseases. The organization conducts campaigns to eradicate diseases like malaria and tuberculosis, promotes the use of vaccines, trains healthcare workers, and advises member nations on how to deal with epidemics or fatal diseases. Its work includes providing safe drinking water, maternal healthcare, immunization programs, and provision of medicines.
