A ruler impacts the nation and society most effectively. Many of our rulers have left a lasting impression on our life. Ashoka the Great ruled about 2000 years ago. Seeing the terrible destruction of life and property during the battle of Kalinga, he was aghast and decided to give up violence of all kinds. He embraced Buddhism and worked for the welfare of people. He carved his messages of peace and goodwill on many pillars and rocks.
Akbar the Great was a Mughal ruler who spread his rule to a large part of India. In the beginning, he fought several wars, but then he started to believe in the coexistence of all religions. He married a Hindu Rajput princess. He started a new faith called Din-ellahi. He encouraged art, music, literature and architecture. Krishnadeva Raya ruled South India about 500 years ago. He built many magnificent buildings and worked for the welfare of his subjects. He also worked for the progress of art and literature. He wrote books too.
