Division
Division
Division
is equal sharing or repeated subtractions.
Oliver has 6 pears. He wants to put the 6 pears equally into 2 baskets.
6 divided by 2 is equal to 3. There are 3 pears in each baskets.
Now, Oliver wants to put the 6 pears equally into 3 baskets.
6
÷
3
=
2
There are 2 pears in each basket.
Lucy has
12
sweets. She shares the sweets equally among her 4 friends
Each friend gets
3
sweets.
Harry has
10
erasers. He puts equal number of erasers in
2
boxes
There are
5
erasers in each box.
Division
Relationship between Division and Multiplication
Rebecca has 8 balloons.
She shares the balloons equally with his 4 friends.
How many balloons does each friend get?
8 ÷ 4 = ?
Recall the table of 4.
1 × 4 = 4
2 × 4 = 8
8 comes in the table of 4 after 2 times.
8 ÷ 4 = 2
Each friend gets 2 balloons.
Nico has
6
cups.
He puts equal number of cups in 3 boxes.
How many cups are there in each box?
6 ÷ 3 = ?
Recall the table of 3.
1 × 3 = 3
2 × 3 = 6
6 comes in the table of 3 in the second step.
6 ÷ 3 = 2
There are 2 cups in each box.
Division
Division without Remainder
Division of a 2-Digit Number by a 1-Digit Number
Let us divide 63 by 7.
• Arrange the numbers in division form.
• Recall multiplication table of 7. 7× 1= 7, 7 × 2 = 14,..., 7 × 9 = 63.
Put 9 in quotient place and 63 below the dividend.
• Subtract 63 from 63.
63 - 63 = 0
So, 63 ÷ 7 = 9
Division of a 3-Digit Number by a 1-Digit Number
Let us divide 123 by 3.
• Arrange the numbers in division form.
• Recall multiplication table of 3.
3 × 1= 3, 3 × 2 = 6, 3 × 3 = 9, 3 × 4 = 12.
Put 4 in quotient place and write 12 below 12.
• Subtract 12 from 12.
12 - 12 = 0
• Bring down 3 after 0.
• Again, recall multiplication table of 3.
3 × 1 = 3
• Put 1 in quotient place and write 3 below 3.
• Subtract 3 from 3. 3 - 3 = 0
So, 123 ÷ 3 = 41
Division
Division with Remainder
Division of a 2-Digit Number by a 1-Digit Number
Let us divide 59 by 8.
• Arrange the numbers in division form.
• Recall multiplication table of 8.
8× 1= 8, 8 × 2 = 16, 8 × 7 = 56.
Put
7 in quotient place and 56 below the dividend.
• Subtract 59 from 56.
59 - 56 = 3
So, Quotient = 7 and Remainder = 3
Division of a 3-Digit Number by a 1-Digit Number
Let us divide 169 by 4.
• Arrange the numbers in division form.
• Recall multiplication table of 4.
4 × 1= 4, 4 × 2 = 8, 4 × 3 = 12, 4 × 4 = 16
Put 4 in quotient place and write 16 below 16.
• Subtract 16 from 16.
16 - 16 = 0
• Bring down 9 after 0.
• Again, recall multiplication table of 4.
4 × 1 = 4, 4 × 2 = 8
• Put 2 in quotient place and 8 below 9.
• Subtract 9 from 8.
9 - 8 = 1
So, Quotient = 42 and Remainder = 1.
