Music and Dance of India
Two types of music and dance are present: classical and folk. To perform classical music and dance, one requires proper training as it follows specific notes. On the contrary, folk music and dance can be learned within the family. Painting and Sculpture Several styles of painting and sculpture are practised in India. Music Two main schools of classical music are Hindustani and Carnatic. Both of them can be vocal and/or instrumental. A raga is an important part of vocal music. Many ragas are sung at a particular time of day or night. Tansen, Haridas and Baiju Bawra are known to be popular classical musicians in the past. Some noted classical musicians at present include MS Subbulakshmi, TS Nandakumar and others. Other popular forms of music in India include filmi music, folk music, Indian rock and Indian pop. At present, instrumental music is also popular in which different instruments are used, such as flute, sitar, sarod, veena, mridang, dholak etc. Zakir Hussain (tabla) and Hari Prasad Chaurasia (flute) are fine musicians at present. Dance The popular classical dance forms in India include Kathak, Bharatnatyam, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Odissi. Popular folk dance forms are Bhangra, Gidda, Nati, Ghoomar, Bihu, Rasleela, Tamasha, Jatra, Garba, Yakshagana etc.
