Atomic Weight And Molecular Weight
Molecular Mass or Molecular Weight
Molecular mass or Molecular Weight is the sum of atomic masses of all atoms of
elements in a molecule.
Steps to calculate the molecular weight:
1. Write the formula of the compound or the molecule.
2. Identify the different types of elements present in it and write their symbols along with the number of atoms.
3. Now multiply the number of atoms with the atomic weights of the respective elements.
4. Finally add them to get molecular weight.
For example : Molecular weight of Sodium Hydroxide ( NaOH ) is equal to the sum of atomic weights of elements present in NaOH i.e., Na + O + H
Therefore Molecular weight of NaOH = Atomic weights of Na + O + H
= 23 + 16 + 1
= 40
