Life in Western Desert of India
Introduction : Rajasthan
Jaipur, also known as the Pink City, is the capital of Rajasthan. Harsh living conditions due to sand dunes and scarce water are found here. Banjaras, nomads who move from place to place with their families and cattle in search of water and food, live here. In northern Rajasthan, people grow crops like wheat, cotton, groundnut, sugarcane, rice and millets. Rajasthan is popular for its forts, palaces and tourist spots like Chittorgarh, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Bikaner, Jaipur, the Victory Tower in Chittorgarh and Hawa Mahal in Jaipur. Its holy places, the Dargah of Moin-ud-din Chishti at Ajmer and Pushkar, as well as the temples of Nathdwara and Eklingji Temple in Udaipur, are popular among devotees. Mount Abu, a hill station, is a beautiful place to visit in the desert. Rajasthanis love wearing bright and colorful clothes and ornaments. Men wear dhoti-kurta and turban while women wear ghagra-choli-odhni. Women are fond of ivory jewelry. Rajasthani, a variant of Hindi, is commonly spoken, but people also understand Hindi. Ghoomar is a popular dance form here. Daal-bati is a well-liked dish in the state. Rajasthan celebrates Teej, Gangaur, Diwali, Dussehra and Eid with great enthusiasm.
