Greater than
Which box has more Chocolates?
The box on the left has more sweets. We can show this as
Greater than ‘>’
If one value is larger than the other value, we use greater than.
The ‘>’ sign has an open side and a close side.

The open side faces the box that has more objects. The close side faces the box that has lesser objects
Less than
Let’s look at another example.
Which box has less Chocolates?
Less than ‘<’
If one value is smaller than the other value, we use less than.
The ‘<’ sign has an open side and a close side.

Comparison Rules
Rule 1: If a number has more digits than another, it is the greater of the two.
Example: Compare 3457 and 621.
Solution: Here, the number 3457 has 4 digits and the number 216 has 3 digits.
Since, 4 > 3
So, 3457 > 621
Rule 2: If two numbers have the same number of digits, we compare them by their extreme leftmost digits. The number with the greater digit is greater.
Example: Compare 6568 and 4265.
Solution : Here, both the numbers have 4 digits. So, observe the digits at the thousands place.
Rule 3:
If two numbers have the same number of digits and their extreme leftmost digits are also same, we compare them by their next digits to the right and so on.
Example: Compare 3457 and 621. Example: Compare 6568 and 4265. Example: Compare 6268 and 6165.
Solution : Here, both the numbers have 4 digits. Also, the extreme leftmost digits are the same. So, we compare the digits to the right of 5.
So, 6268 > 6165
