Located on the Western Ghats, Karnataka comprises both plain and plateau. The Krishna, Tungabhadra and Kaveri are important rivers. Both tanks and canals are used for irrigation. There are many waterfalls on which electricity is generated. Sandalwood and teak forests are found in abundance here. Important occupations include farming, industry and mining. The important crops grown here are rice, millets, cotton, coconut and sugarcane. The important industries include computers, silk, machine tools, fertilizers, automobiles etc. It has a large number of cottage industries in incense sticks and sandal articles. Its plateau area is rich in minerals, such as iron ore, bauxite, manganese, gold etc. The Kolar gold mines are the deepest in the world. Bidri work is quite & popular here. People of Karnataka speak Kannada, while other south Indian languages and English are also spoken. Rice is the staple diet. Carnatic music and Yakshagan are popular music and dance forms respectively. Dussehra and many other festivals are celebrated here enthusiastically. Bengaluru is Karnataka’s capital city, with other significant towns like Mysore, Hubli, and Dharwad. Tourist adore the gardens in Mysore and Bengaluru. The Bandipur and Nagarhole wildlife sanctuaries are also popular tourist destinations.
